Beginning:
Salaam my dear kids!!!
Insha’Allah you are doing well and enjoyed your time while you were making the craft! My dears! I am sure that most of you rather know why we have all gathered here today for? Am I right? (Please allow the kids to give their opinions and allow them to make a connection with you.) Yes, you are all right! Today, we have all gathered here on occasion of the month of Muharram and the Day of Ashura to better understand what happened on these days and know the reasons as to why programs are held every year during these days that our elders attend. All of you told me that these days are dedicated to Imam Hussain (PBUH) and it is because of him and his companions that we have programs every year. Now, allow me to familiarize you better with this dear Imam.
My dears, the day that Imam Hussain was born, Imam Ali Peace be upon him handed over Imam Hussain to the Prophet. Upon seeing the newborn child for the first time, the Messenger of God (Salawat) started crying and said: In the future, bad people who are our enemies of us the Ahlul-bayt will oppress his rights!
Many years passed by and after the Prophet passed away, then bad people martyred lady Fatemeh al- Zahra, then Imam Ali and then Imam Hassan. It appeared as though people were thinking less of God and the Prophet and were mostly thinking of themselves and how they could have fun! In short, during that time, the 3rd Imam of us Shias, Imam Hussein, was the Imam of the people. However, there was a tyrant and cruel king who not only would commit many sins but also would not allow Imam Hussein to become the Imam of the people. Therefore, people were not able to use him as a guide in their lives. The name of this cruel king was Yazid.
Yazid, who was the enemy of Imam Hussain, fought with Imam Hussain and his dear family in a place called Karbala. The army of Yazid was very large and many people were part of his army. On the other hand, the army of Imam Hussain was very small, however good and faithful people were part of Imam Hussain’s army. We, and many people around the world, every year during this time, meaning on the day of the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, which is called the Day of Ashura, gather, mourn, cry and are sad for the martyrdom of Imam Hussain, his brother Hazrat Abbas and Imam Hussain’s kids.
Now, before we move on to the other programs that we have planned for you all today, just like always, let’s start this program in the name and the remembrance of our dear God. Ask dear God to help us to have a good program and learn many new things. First, let’s all say out loud: b-ismi-llāhi r-raḥmāni r-raḥīmi (In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful)
Which means: that we are asking for God’s help who is the most gracious and merciful.
Now, today we would like to learn together a verse from Surah al-Baghareh, which is also related to today’s program. Let’s all listen carefully while I recite this verse aloud and then later I will tell you it’s meaning.
وَلَا تَلْبِسُوا الْحَقَّ بِالْبَاطِلِ وَتَكْتُمُوا الْحَقَّ وَأَنتُمْ تَعْلَمُونَ ﴿٤٢﴾
And do not mix the truth with falsehood or conceal the truth while you know [it]. (42)
{The translation written above, is only given for mentor’s use}
My dears, do you all know what truth means? It means what is right and real. For example, when we say that its someone’s right, it means that it belongs to him or her. For example, when we are standing in a line, it is the right of the person ahead of us to finish their work sooner. For example, in the street, we see that those cars can cross if they have a green light. Another example would be, if something belongs to someone, like a toy, then it is their right to play with it and we do not have the right to use it before we ask for permission. However, sometimes the devil can trick people, and they may take away the right of others and not accept their right. For example, if something belongs to another person, they might say no that doesn’t belong to you and this way they have taken their right away. And this is a very bad thing to do. That is why as we read in this verse, God tells us, do not take away someone’s right, and do not do something to hide someone’s right. For example, not waiting your turn when standing in a line, and ruining the order so it would not be known whose right it was to be first in line.
Now that you understood the meaning of this verse and learned a good lesson from it, it is good to know that Yazid, who was Imam Hussain’s enemy, took away his right. Meaning that it was Imam Hussain’s right to be the successor of the Prophet, however Yazid with force and enmity did not allow Imam Hussain to be the leader and Imam of the Muslims.
This is very sad, to see someone take away your right and not accept your right. Just think to yourself, what you would do if someone comes and takes away your favorite toy by force and says that it is theirs and you are not allowed to use it!
One of the things that the Imam of our Time will do when he reappears is that he will give back people’s rights to themselves. Meaning that those who were oppressed and whose rights were taken away from them, with the help of the Imam of Our Time will get back their rights. That is why we ask God to allow the Imam of Our Time to reappear sooner so not only will he get his right, but also give back the rights of others.
My dears! What is the right of the Imam of Our Time, which has not been given to him yet? Who here knows? Yes, Great! His right is for him to be our Imam and be able to easily live amongst us, guide and help us all. However, now because of bad people he does not live amongst us, which means he is away from his right! We pray a lot for his reappearance, and we love him very much.

Story: The Day of Ashura
The caravan of Imam Hussain had reached the city of Karbala. The camels knelt and their load was taken off them. One by one, the children would come off the camels and horses. The elders set up the tents. The children were happy. Tonight, they could finally sleep in tent houses.
On the other side, a river full of water could be seen. The children, like the adults wanted to make their water bags full of water. The water bags were filled with water from the Furat River (Euphrates) The children were busy playing in the great plains along the Furat River. Karbala became beautiful and the atmosphere became full of excitement. However, on the other side….
On the other side, Imam was faced with a large army. An army that none of its members were good people. An army full of mean and angry men. But, Imam Hussein was not scared of anyone. He was the strongest and bravest man living on the earth and he nurtured his companions. They too were strong, brave and faithful.
The kids were playing near Imam Hussein Peace be upon Him, and the Imam was looking after the children. Until, a few days before the 10th of Muharram arrived and the enemy no longer allowed the caravan of Imam to access water.
The weather was hot and the kids were thirsty. They would see the water, but could not go towards the river like a few days before to drink and play. With only a bit of water that the caravan had left, everyone had to endure the heat and their thirst. Until finally the 10th of Muharram arrived.
On the 10th day of Muharram, the enemy’s army wanted to start the war and wanted to fight with the kindest and the best people on earth, who had been invited by them to help them. Imam Hussein (Peace be Upon Him) spoke to them several times.
He reminded them of the dear God. And reminded them of the beloved and kind Prophet, which had only been 50 years since he was not among them.
He told them, do you all not know that I am the grandson of the Prophet and this caravan is his family. Do you all remember that the Prophet of mercy would always tell you all to be kind to us and love us? All the angry and tricked people of that large army would look at our luminous Imam and would remember all of this. But their hearts were so hardened and no longer close to God, that they were not willing to stop from doing the injustices they were about to do.
Our kind Imam told them several times that we do not want to fight with you, but we also will not tolerate any injustice. Those people would not even allow the Imam and his caravan to return home, because they wanted to force the Imam to accept the leadership of the tyrant leader of the time Yazid.
However, Imam was never scared of anyone, and would never accept their bad actions. Because he was a guide for the people and everyone had to know that this king is tyrant and cruel. Hence, Imam and his caravan never started the war. But…
Finally, the enemy started the war and the large army of the bad people, attacked Imam Hussain, his family and his friends. And did not even have mercy on the children and the infant!!!
All the youth and men of the Imam’s army were martyred and only Imam Hussain and his brother Hazrat Abbas was left. Hazrat Abbas, who was the uncle of Imam Hussein’s children, was so sad to see the children so thirsty. He asked Imam Hussein (Peace be upon him) for his permission to go towards the river and fight the enemy so he may bring back a bit of water for the children.
The brave and strong uncle of the children went towards the river with great hopes and fought with a great number of the enemy’s army. But, at the moment when the enemy saw the water in his hands, they wanted to attack him but he was so strong that they had to attack him from the back.
Therefore, the kind uncle of the children no longer returned to the tents. The children were eagerly looking to see their uncle and with aching hearts would cry and say: I wish we did not want water.
None of the loyal companions of Imam Hussein, his children and family allowed their Imam of the Time, Imam Hussein to go before anyone else to fight the enemy and be martyred sooner. Therefore, Imam Hussein (PBUH) was the last man from the caravan who fought against that evil and stonehearted enemy.
Imam bade the children his last farewell and headed towards the battlefield. Even though Imam Hussein was very tired, sad, and thirsty, he fought bravely and strongly with the evil army. He killed many of his stonehearted enemies, however the enemy’s army was very, very large and so finally they brutally martyred our dear Imam.
The children and the women of the caravan of Imam Hussain (PBUH) had to tolerate many hardships. The enemy’s army treated all of them who were all sad from losing their family members and more importantly their Imam of the Time, so badly; they broke their hearts. However, the children were always good and kind.
My dears, we are also the Shia’s of our dear Imam and should always follow him and the Imam of our Time. We should always with our good manners and kindness try to be good Muslims; so, by our good actions we can make the heart of the Imam of our Time happy. Everyone around us whether they are Muslims or not should understand from our actions that: the Shia’s of Imam Hussein (PBUH) are kind, have good morals, and take side with the truth.
When we do all of this, and are kind, listen to what God and our Imam says; others will like our religion and will try to act like us. By doing this, not only do we make the Imam of Our Time happy but in turn we have been able to do something in guiding others.

Everyone please pay careful attention to the 2 plays that will be performed for you. So afterwards, you can answer my questions.
1st Play:
Zahra, Lily, Emma and Mary are busy drawing.
Zahra: what are you all going to draw?? Well I say, that we all should draw one thing, and see how each of our drawings look like?
Emma: Yeah, I totally agree. It is a great idea.
Lily and Mary also agree and Lily says: I think we should draw a forest with a bunch of animals?
Mary: noooooo, I’m not good at drawing animals. I think we should draw a field or a garden of fruits. It’s way easier! What do you all think?
Everyone agrees and say yes.
Lily: Well, let’s get started.
A few seconds pass by and Zahra tells Emma:
Zahra: Emma, did you just buy this pencil?
Emma: Yeah, my mom bought it for me. Do you like it? I love it!
Lily: Yeah, I love it too!
Zahra: Yeahhhh, its very cool. And has a great color!
Mary also nods and agrees.
A few moments later, Emma leaves the room to drink water
Emma: Hey you all, I am very thirsty, I am going to go to drink water.
Mary: Yeah go on.
Lily’s pencil falls on the ground, she bends down to grab it.
At this moment, Zahra stealthy grabs Emma’s pencil and puts it in her pocket.
Mary sees her but doesn’t bother and the three of them continued with their drawings. And Emma quickly returns.
Emma: ughhh hey, have you all seen my pencil? It was right here!
Kids: Noooooo
Lily: How can it get lost??? I mean it might of have magically gotten wings and flew away! (sarcastically)
Emma becomes upset and turns towards Lily and says:
Emma: did you take it Lily? You really liked it? Didn’t you?
Lily becomes upset and leaves the room in tears!
Zahra and Mary do not bother, and the three of them sit while being upset.
****************The end of Play #1*************************************
Well my dears, tell me the bad actions that was done in this play?
Great Job you all, I think you all pointed out to the right thing. Well before I tell you my own answer, let’s see the 2nd play.
2nd Play:
It starts out just like the 1st play up until the moment when Emma returns to the room and says something to Lily.
Emma becomes upset and turns towards Lily and says:
Emma: did you take it Lily? You really liked it? Didn’t you?
Lily becomes upset and leaves the room in tears!
Mary quickly turns towards Zahra and says:
Mary: Zahra!! Why did you do such a thing? I saw that you took the pencil. Why didn’t you say anything? I cannot say that you didn’t take it, because I saw you and I know the right is with Lily and Emma. Now that they will come back, I must tell them.
However, you yourself can put it back the pencil on the table, so Emma can have a peace of mind and there would be no problem.
I do not want you to look bad, but on the other hand, I can’t lie and ignore the truth
Zahra (in shame): I am sorry Mary! I really did not want to take it. I just wanted to see it. I don’t know why all the sudden I put it in my pocket. I also became upset and wanted to put it back, but I felt too ashamed. Thanks for helping me out and not made me feel shameful in front of everyone else.
Zahra quickly puts back Emma’s pencil on the table. (Like how it was before in middle of all the other pencils, and did not take her time to do this.)
Emma and Lily enter the room and sit at their place.
Emma sees her pencil and says: Ahhhh, look there is my pencil. Then turns towards Lily and again apologizes to her and kisses her.
Emma: My dear Lily, I am so sorry that I judged so quickly and became mad. I am very upset about what I have done. Will you really forgive me?
Lily (while smiling): Off course, my dear Emma.it is no big deal. Thank God, this problem ended fast, and our friendship didn’t get ruined.
They continued on with their drawings.
***************** **End of Play #2*****************************
Well my dears! How did you like the 2nd play? Did you all catch the good actions in this second play?
Yes, and that is we should never judge and say something until we are sure of it. Most of the times, judging too quickly does not always look good and in fact it only has bad effects. Like what? Like talking behind someone’s back (i.e. backbiting), accusing someone, and breaking someone’s heart…. and many more.
And we saw that taking the side that is right, is always the right thing to do. If you are aware of the truth and what is right, but don’t bring it up and don’t do anything, and allow someone’s right to be taken away; well this is a very, very bad thing to do. We are humans, and if we want to be good human beings and don’t want our own rights to be taken away, we should always take the side that is right and defend that.
Unfortunately, many of the people of Kufa knew that Imam Hussain (PBUH) is the grandson of Prophet. In addition, they knew that those who have come to Karbala are the Ahlul-bayt of the Prophet; the truth is with them, God is with them, and if they listen to them, they have done the right thing. However, they denied the truth, meaning that not only did they not side with the truth, and did not support Imam Hussain (PBUH), but they carried out a bad action, and they martyred and took the dear Ahlul-bayt of the Prophet as captives.
My dears, let us all remember to not judge too quickly, and always take sides with truth and what is right.

A 6-month-old infant
I am Ali al-Asghar

It was very dear to me

When I was little
In middle of the cradle
I was like a fragrant flower
My uncle was Abul-fazl (PBUH)
Rugayah was my sister
Hazrat Ali al-Akbar
Was the name of my brother
My toys were
The hands of my dad
A beautiful smile
Was always on my face

Early from his work
He prayed and said:
God wants us to
Go to the city of Makkah
To a beautiful city
A city that
Your dad truly misses
Image 4:
The people of that time
To that day and time
Would ride their camels
Instead of car or train
We began our journey and went
Through the desert
With camels, one by one
Would go through different cities
Image 5:
Until we final reached
To an old city
The birds of that city
Were friends with each
When we reached Makkah
My father prayed lots
He held up his hands high
And called out the dear God
In the middle of Makkah
There was a black house
With its golden drain pipe
The whole city glowing
Like a shining moon

They say if anyone comes
To kiss this house
Is very, very cute
When I kissed the house
I didn’t want at all
To separate from the house

One day my dad in Makkah
called us all
For each and every one of us
Prayed lots and lots

Are coming here
We have to go to a war
With a bunch of giants in this world
Then my uncle Abbas
Got the camels ready
One, by one he
Put us all on the camels
Image 8:
The few days we were on the road
We became tired and thirsty
Then we saw a bunch of giants
Have closed the way to the water
Finally, we reached
To the desert of Karbala
We put up tents and stayed
Thirsty along the river
Our elders put up there
The tents and stayed
They all prayed there
Image 9:
A few days after, I remember
My uncle Abbas took the bag of water
Went to bring us some water
My uncle was strong
My uncle abul-fazl
Came with a full bag of water
My uncle had killed
A bunch of bad giants
Image 10:
One day, early in the morning
The elders went to fight the giants
I was alone in the tent
They were not our opponents
The mean and ugly giants
Were part of the hell
But we were part of the heavens
Image 11:
When, my dad became alone
He came to my tent
He said: my son will you come?
Let’s go to fight the enemy
Even though I was small
I wanted to fight
Against my dad’s enemy

Whoever fights the giants
They will become like a bird
I fought with the giants
I became the best
I went up to the sky
And became like a bird

You were thinking of water
Thirsty you were, but
Did not even take a sip of water
The children of the Prophet were
Thirsty than you were
Their cries would be heard from afar
By your ears
You rushed towards the tents
While carrying the water skin upon your shoulder
But the enemies suddenly
Attacked upon you
During the final moments,
Though you were silent
Sorrowful you became
Thinking only about the thirsty children

End/Concluding and Reciting Dua al-Faraj
Well my dears, how did you all like the program? Do you all want to think for a minute and then tell me one by one what you’ve learned today?
- By reciting verse 42 of Surah, al-baghareh we learned that we must respect other rights and never take away someone’s rights. If we see someone else’s rights is being taken away and not be given to them, we must help them and tell others that it was his/her right. And God only allowed Imam Ali and his children to be the successors after the Prophet. However, some bad people whom were tricked by the devil, wanted to become rulers and oppress people. Therefore, they took away the rights of our Imams and did not allow them to become the rulers of people so people could have a good time.
- Today, we understood a bit more about what happened on the Day of Ashura and why we gather every year to remember and lament. And learned, what those tyrant men whom were tricked by the devil did to our dear Imam, his family and his friends, which is why we are so sad about it. We all can learn a lesson from this event, and that is to increase our faith with God and our love towards our dear Imams so, the devil is not able to trick us easily!
- One of the times that we might not do the right thing and be tricked by the devil is when we know the truth but because of our own self-interest and fear, we do not bring it up. This is exactly what people did on the Day of Ashura. Even though they knew the truth and knew the right is with Imam Hussain (PBUH) and his companions, they denied and did not accept the truth! Which made that sad event to take place, which every year, we hold programs and are sad about that tragic event.
Let us all come together today to make a promise with the Imam of Our Time, to make our faiths stronger and hearts closer to him so we can be safe from the evils of the devil. Let us know what is true, and the right is with whom and know that the right is always with the Holy Quran, the Prophet and our Imams. Whatever they say and have done, is the right and the truth because God has said this. And we also believe this, and are always their supporters, and will never leave them alone. Let us all pray for our Imam, and promise that we will forever be with him, and will always support him. Until the next time we see each other, try to remember all the things we learned today, review them with yourselves, and try to act to it so we can make the heart of the Imam of Our Time happy and be a strong companion of the truth and right who is the Imam of Our Time.
Reciting Dua al-Faraj while standing up and facing toward the Qibla, out of love and respect for His Eminence.

Translation of Dua al-Faraj
In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful
O’ God, send your blessing upon Muhammad and the Household
of Muhammad
